Virgin Atlantic Airways Airbus A340-300 G-VAIR that Take off from Tokyo Narita International Airport. Airbus A340 is a wide body jet aircraft of 4 turbo fan engines developed simultaneously with A330.
These passenger aircraft were divided into A330, which is impossible to fly offshore due to ETOPS constraints, and A340 for ultra long-distance flight that can fly offshore.
With conventional ETOPS rules twin-jet aircraft were not allowed to fly a route more than 60 minutes away from the landing airport.However, as the reliability of the turbofan engine improved and the ETOPS rule was revised, offshore flight became possible even on twin jet aircraft.
As a result, Airbus A 340 loses the advantage of being a airliner for ultra long distance routes that is not bound by the ETOPS rule.
