The Yamagata Hanagasa Festival, held every year in August in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture, is also called the Tohoku Four Great Festivals, which add the Hanagasa Festival to the three major Tohoku festivals such as the Aomori Nebuta Festival and the Sendai Tanabata Festival. It is said that the dance originated from dancing in the early days of the Showa era, “Hanagasa Ondo”, and waving and turning the shade to boost the economy. In 2012, 13,000 people participated, the largest number to date, and some organizations from Taiwan also visited Japan and participated in the Hanagasa Festival parade.
